ATHENS The capital of Greek took its name from the goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge. This is where democracy was born. In the center of town are two hills, the Acropolis with the monuments from the age of Pericles, and Lycabettus with the picturesque chapel of Ai Giorgis. SANTORINI one of the best known of the Cyclades, differs from the other islands in the group thanks to its geological morphology, the result of action by a volcano dormant. The landscape on the western side of the island, where towering cliffs crowned by tiny and blindingly - white houses plunge straight into the depths of the sea. Hundrets of steps from the capital of fira to Skala one can walk or take a ride on donkey - back. There is a funicular railway for those who wish to avoid the hundreds of steps. Fira is very attractive, with winding narrow streets, arcades and a quarter where the Catholic nobility once dwelt. There is a superb view out from Fira to the Kamenes, the two islets of black stone created by the volcano. Ancient Thira is a site of great archaeological interest. The site at Akrotiri has yielded the remains of a Minoan city destroyed around 1500BC by an eruption of the volcano on Thira.

RHODOS largest of the Dodecanese, Rhodes has become an important regional centre, thanks to its location, climate and natural attractions. It is known as the side of the Sun. Pindar mentions in one of his Odes that it was born of the union of ''Helios'' the Sun God and the nymph Rhoda. It was first inhabited in the Neolithic era. Its economy and culture flourished until the 3rd century B.C., when it was the predominant power in the Aegean. When, a thousand years later, it fell into the hands of the knights of St. John, it became again the centre of power, symbolized by its magnificent medieval town and the imposing castle and palace of the Grand Masters. The island abounds in lovely and interesting places to visit, such as the Valley of the Butterflies, the village of Trianda, Kamiros and the ruins of The Dorian city, Calithea, Koskinou, Afandou, Faliraki, Rodini, Lindos and The temple of Athena Lindia. Finally, there are splendid beaches all over the island, some of which are equipped with facilities for bathers and equipment for water sports.
